Moving Roof Mechanical Upgrade

Download Case Study

Vertimax were entrusted to carry out the major roof upgrade works in a short time frame for the 2025 Australian Open.

The Challenge: Navigating Time Constraints and Complex Logistics
The project posed several challenges, including a narrow five-week window for completion of works requiring the roof to open, adverse weather conditions, and the need to accommodate a fluid event schedule. Tasks such as rewiring the moving roof, installing additional access platforms, and replacing all eight slide bearings required meticulous planning and precise execution. Limited headroom required the design and manufacture of specialist lifting equipment to allow components weighing up to 900kg to be safely removed and replaced in the roof space. The intricate process of lifting heavy components over the arena’s timber velodrome added further complexity. Ensuring that the roof was operational, tested, and ready ahead of the 2025 Australian Open was a non-negotiable requirement.

The Vertimax Solution: Innovation, Flexibility, and UnparalleledExpertise
At Vertimax, we thrive on challenges. Our solution included the innovative manufacturing of additional slide bearings, enabling us to replace two bearings simultaneously and run multiple teams.

This efficient approach allowed continuous workflow by overhauling removed bearings while moving to the next set up location. We installed new operational equipment, enhanced safety features, and high-definition cameras for remote monitoring, ensuring the moving roof’s reliability and safety. Our team’s adaptability ensured that all works were completed without compromising the arena’s event schedule, even amidst challenging site conditions.

The Result: A Flawless Finish, Delivered Ahead of Schedule
Thanks to our unwavering commitment and expertise, the project was completed two weeks ahead of the planned practical completion date. The moving roof operated flawlessly during the2025 Australian Open, contributing to the event’s success. Our deep understanding of the arena’s operations and over 25 years of experience in managing Melbourne’s moving roofs set us apart, delivering not just a project, but peace of mind to our client. The project’s profitability and smooth execution further underscore why Vertimax remains the trusted partner for complex infrastructure solutions in both the built and new construction environment.
